The 2024 JTBC Seoul Marathon saw a record number of runners participating, with many tackling the full marathon and 10km race.
Despite waiting for additional entries on the Runnerble app, I missed out and decided to become a cheering fairy this time.
Being a cheering fairy means supporting runners to complete the marathon (like a fairy...?).
To offer more practical support, I started buying supplies necessary for a full marathon.
With 37,000 participants, including many international runners who flew in, I decided to incorporate Eastar Jet's brand color—red—into my costume, given their role in bringing so many people to Korea. To support the runners as they sweated through the full marathon, I prepared glucose candy, power gels, and amino acids, which led me to...
A candy costume seemed like the perfect fit.
I considered Teletubbies Po, Pokemon's Roy, Super Mario, and Candy!! The candy choice connected well with the glucose candy, haha!
That nostalgic feeling...!
The Art of Finishing
To liven up the simple candy costume, I decided to add a bib number, just like the runners. Similar to the runners embarking on their journey of 42.195km from the Sangam World Cup Stadium to the Olympic Stadium, I created a "Completion Ticket" and a sign that read "FREE" in English for international participants.
And red means hearts, right~?
Wearing a headband to help them finish, I set off.
With 37,000 participants, the marathon was massive.
The weather...was incredibly hot. Was this really November?
I had worn winter clothes, so I was sweating profusely...
At the starting point, I sat there offering power gels, amino acids, water, and glucose candy. Water was incredibly popular, and the power gels were all gone before reaching the F zone.
I had three cheering spots: the World Cup Park starting point (0km), Gwangnaru Station (29km), and the Olympic Park finish line (42km). Changing clothes was too bothersome, so I cheered with my candy costume on the subway.
At the 29km mark, I finally met my boyfriend and filmed him. I gave the remaining glucose and amino acids to a runner, wished them luck, and headed to the finish line.
Taking the subway and walking was actually slower than running...
Those runners are truly amazing. I missed my boyfriend at the finish line, but we took a photo to commemorate the medals...
Congratulations to everyone who finished!
